Assystem is proud to provide the engineering expertise for India’s new Integrated Nuclear Recycle Plant (INRP) at Tarapur. This project, led by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), is a major milestone for the nation’s energy future.

Why this project matters?

The INRP is the first facility of its kind in India. Its job is simple but vital: it recycles used nuclear fuel. By “closing the cycle,” India can reuse its resources and rely less on imported uranium. This moves the country closer to true self-reliance in energy.

Assystem’s role on the Ground

Assystem in India played a central role in delivering end-to-end civil, structural, and architectural engineering for the project. Our team was responsible for 19 buildings in total, including 12 high-security nuclear process blocks. To ensure these structures stand the test of time, we focused on four key areas:

  • Solid Foundations: analysing the soil and ground data to design foundations that are safe and efficient.
  • Smart Design: creating architectural plans that prioritise safety while making sure the plant is easy to operate.
  • Earthquake Safety: performing advanced seismic analyses using both response spectrum and time history methods.
  • Protecting Equipment: calculating how vibrations affect every floor of the plant.

Digital Engineering: A key enabler in the project

Digital engineering has been a key enabler in the project. Assystem used Autodesk Revit BIM for 3D modelling, RCC drawing generation, and preparation of Bills of Quantities, improving coordination and design clarity. Structural analysis was performed using SAP2000, ensuring robust, code-compliant designs for all safety-critical structures.

Client Benefits

  • By prioritizing the highest standards of safety and strict regulatory compliance, our team ensured enhanced risk mitigation.
  • Future-proofed asset protection.
  • Accelerated project timelines through ‘constructability’.
  • Optimised life-cycle costs and operational reliability.

Supporting India’s Nuclear Ambitions

As India accelerates its nuclear programme to strengthen energy security and meet long-term decarbonisation goals, projects like Tarapur propels India towards self-reliance in nuclear fuel management. Assystem’s contribution reflects its deep expertise in nuclear engineering and its commitment to supporting India’s strategic objectives in the sector. With a strong track record across nuclear facilities and safety-critical projects, Assystem continues to actively partner with Indian stakeholders to deliver reliable, future-ready solutions that underpin the nation’s nuclear growth.
